How to install and use a mod

Post by Fafhred »

Last time around that I played Drakan, I was not aware of the existence of mods.

Today, I finished the game again, downloaded a few mods from here, but could not find any information as for how to install them.

I did a search on this forum, an internet search.
I found a lot of dead links, but no valid link hosting the information.

I suspect that at one time it would have been on Surreal's website for Drakan or forum, but the first does not seem to exist any more, and the second has clearly been heavily pruned.

<u><b>EDIT:</b></u>
Ok, I found (from a mod's readme.txt) that each mod need to be installed in its own sub-folder within Drakan, and that some need a database which I also downloaded.

And from another mod's readme.txt, I found how to start mods:

Dragonmech Series

You'll have to use developer mode to play Dragonmech. Hold down shift while starting Drakan, and a box will appear. Go to the developer tab and enable developer mode, and then start the game. When you select New Game, a list of levels will appear. To select the difficulty level, hold Ctrl when you select New Game. Double click on Dragonmech Desert in the level list to start playing.
...
========================end quote====================================

Now, I did try that, but holding down the shift key while starting Drakan never get me that box, and I still arrive to the normal mode start.

<u><b>2nd EDIT:</b></u>
Well, I found the solution from a walkthrough:
You need to shift double-click the icon to start the engine options, NOT directly the game.
And you get the box the message above was referring to, with 3 tabs (only 2 tabs if started normally).

Fafhred, you're so helpful... you answered your own question!

Battlemech is a great mod. Other favorites are:

*Journey To Azenera (best mod)
*Aergoth (unfinished, but also one of the absolute best)
*Lady Winter at the Top of the World
*War of a Dark Age' (Man, I never did finish that one because it was so tough)
*Crossroads of Drakan
*The Fortress of Unreasonable Darkness (FUNNY, EXCELLENT STUFF!!!)

Others will probably list some of their favorites, so... you have a lot of QUALITY Drakan fun ahead of you, as some of these are on par with the game. Especially Azenera and Aergoth.

I'll be glad to pass along any you can't find if I still have them.
