Editing Rynn, Alpha maps, skin FX

MiNdfiRe
sageous .. master of alpha maps .. hear my plea ..

how would i go about creating an alpha map so that portions of rynn's "skin" will be invisible?

here is an idea of what i want to do ...

1. chop off the pony tail .. make it invisible (give her short hair)

2. ensure that parts of her bangs are not visible (right now whenever i change the hair parts of it are black and not invisible)

here are some other questions ..

1. if i wanted to add "FX" to the skin .. can i (in other words if i wanted her eyes to have "fire" properties, is that possible). how can i go about doing this if it is possible?

2. by exporting the main body by taking a screen shot, the maximum resolution i can get is 146 x 146 .. since the regular image is 256 x 256 and i cannot import 146 x 146 .. will there be a drastic change in skin quality if i shrink the image to 64 x 64 or enlarge it to 256 x 256? if so, how do i get around this?

you have been invaluable to my creation of tHe faLLeN .. if you could help me on this issue, i promise i won't dissapoint you.

I can help you with some of these:

You probably can't give Rynn's eyes "fire" properties, but you can give her eyes the appearance of moving flames. To do this, you'll have to make an animated texture. Unfortunately, I don't know how to add texture files to the model textures box, so I can't help you there.

Alpha maps... I've never been able to get these to work. You might have to use a grayscale image with either white as opaque and black as invisible, or the other way around... I've tried it, though, and it doesn't work too well. Even if you made her ponytail invisible, it would look like Rynn has a hole in the back of her head, so that may not be the best idea...

You can get the pictures up to 256x256 in the database box view. Go to options, deselect view texture name, and then click on the texture area and press the ' key so it zooms in to the maximum size, which is 256x256. Take your screenshot there. Or you could wait for the next editor version, which is supposed to have export capabilities.

I hope this is at least a little help to you, MiNdfiRe. I liked your tHe faLLeN level - cool music!

double click on texture in database window to open the texture properties.

click add\alpha map

select alpha map and click edit\convert and use defaults.

An alpha map is a replica of the original texture in black and white where black is full alpha and white is 100% opague. You have to create this yourself. Since the background of the hair texture is already black...simply taking a copy of it and removing the color would result in a usable alpha map.

you cant add fx to a skin in the way you are thinking but theres nothing stopping you from doing good art on the skin that looks the way you want...you can animate textures so fire eyes is as possible as you are skilled in 2d animation.

To make a texture animate copy it out and make your frames of animation yourself with whatever program you use to do art. Add each bitmap into the database. NOTE that the bitmaps you are adding will apply as animations for the last bitmap in the database already...so if you adding animations for rynn hair but the last texture before you added em was her leggs...it wont result the way you want.

anyway...to get those frames animating...select the first new frame and double click it to open its properties...check off "next frame"...the database window doesnt redraw properly in this case so close/open it now. The texture should have been added to the texture (original hopefully) before it..denoted by the green corner...repeat for all frames. Now go to original and tell it to be "next frame" also.

They should animate now. if not i may type more when i have time.

i dunno what you mean about only being able to get 146x146 look in database window options and set teh size to be the size of the texture you are trying to get. there isnt any reason for you to not get the perfect size.

as for the shrink/enlarge questions..depends on texture ofcourse...try it and see.
