Speed Run

Post by Outlaw Wyvern »

I've played Drakan very many times in very many ways, but one way I've never tried is a Speed Run.
This weekend, I may... MAY... start one and see it through.
If my schedule permits, I'll give it a shot.

I remember making a competitive gold-gathering run a while back when others were doing it on PlanetDrakan. That was cool.

This should be a breeze. If I do it, it'll be Melee major with a Magic minor, or perhaps a split minor.
(...of course, I could change my mind and go for all Archery minor...)
Six points brings out some decent bows, but since the object will be speed, I'm leaning towards Magic.

I house-sat for some friends who were camping this weekend, so I didn't get to a speed run.
I played Drakan plenty, but my interrupted schedule didn't allow for the Speed thing.

***SPOILERS***

I played a Mage Save, and because I wanted to be able to afford Spells at the same level I was gaining exp, I used the Castle Glitch to steal the 10,000 gold from Surdana that you get later in the game, then I used the Warp glitch to crack into Kragmor, which netted at least 30,000 gold.
I decided to run the table, so I Warped into the Valley of the Fallen, which is now complete. When I go to the Andrellians, I'll be at SEVEN MAGIC. I'll probably level up near the end of Bonegrinder's cave, so I may bring the Armor of the Order with me.
As soon as I get to Ravenshold, I'm gonna fly straight to the top of the Tundra and try to crack into Shiverbane.
That way, I'll have Mournbringer waiting for me at Brekk's.

The time I had to play Drakan this weekend was very well-spent.

I've done speed runs myself, although it's been so long since I've done it that way I can't recall how long it took, but I did get it done in less than a day.

I will be attempting this challenge with uber large-level skips, without dying, and in a single segment. Thanks to testing out some of the glitches in my glitch tutorial videos, I believe I will be able to beat the game (up to the Final Cutscene) in under 1 hour. I will send a link to the video when I complete it. :)

Just finished with my speed run (after over 100 or over 200 tries). My runs were plagued with discovering a few tricks, deaths, obstacles, and Rynn/Arokh discovering new ways to screw up but after with all the button mashing, sweaty hands, and a days worth of game play, I am finally done, throwing down the guantlet, and hanging up my. There was only two mistakes in the run that might have made the run go under 29 minutes, but I wanted to get below 30 minutes and I did just that.

Shout outs to Outlaw Wyvern and Rainbow Boss (YouTuber) for providing essential glitches that has made this run all the more possible. Thank you for your contributions to the Drakan community and thank you Outlaw for providing the idea for this challenge.

A video will be uploaded tomorrow evening to bring out the new year as a celebration to the Drakan Community. Without further adieu here is the information on my run.

Time - 29:06.87 or 29:05.90 I'm unsure which is right, but the latter is the run time by SDA rules and the former is done by math from the full-length video fitted to SDA rules

I watched your speedrun, it's surprising how quickly the game can be completed by avoiding combat and using the known glitches to cut out large sections of the game. How long did it take you to do a complete playthrough and have you done a speedrun of all the levels excluding optional content?

It took about 18 gaming hours to finally get a satisfying run. I have never done a speed run with all the story-essential levels, but I am considering it. I might have to ban myself from using any Mountain-Bypass glitches or Warp Glitches otherwise I would be using it in almost every level. Except maybe for getting into caves that I can explore and leave with Arokh (like the Grull Base with the Blood from a Pagan Altar). Otherwise, the run would most likely be repetitive and boring if I spammed Outlaw's glitch.

Well I did it again. This time with some new glitches and faster ways of doing the same things that made a much faster run possible. Here is the new World Record Time.

Time - 27:22.93

 • Speed Demos Archive (SDA) Rules
 • Original PS2/Original Controller/US Version of D:TAG
 • Single Segment, No Deaths
 • Uber Large-Level Skip Speed Run with Glitches
Thanks to PafiSC, over on Twitch, for showcasing his previous world record run. Without learning and utilizing his glitch to make Rynn run faster, this run would not have been possible.
